The Essential Bill Withers: A Tribute to the Soul Legend
Bill Withers was one of the most influential and beloved soul singers of the 1970s and beyond. His timeless hits such as \"Ain't No Sunshine\", \"Lean on Me\", \"Lovely Day\" and \"Just the Two of Us\" have touched millions of hearts and inspired countless artists. In 2013, a compilation album titled The Essential Bill Withers was released, featuring 34 tracks that span his entire career from 1971 to 1985. The album showcases his remarkable talent as a singer, songwriter, musician and producer, as well as his versatility in blending R&B, soul, funk, gospel and pop.
Bill Withers was born on July 4, 1938 in Slab Fork, West Virginia, the youngest of six children. He grew up in a poor coal-mining town and faced many hardships, including a stutter that made him feel insecure. He joined the Navy at 17 and served for nine years, during which he developed an interest in singing and writing songs. He moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and worked as an assembler for various companies while pursuing his musical dreams. He recorded demo tapes with his own money and performed in clubs at night.
In 1970, he caught the attention of Clarence Avant, the owner of Sussex Records, who signed him to a record deal and assigned Booker T. Jones to produce his first album. The album, Just as I Am, was released in 1971 and featured two hit singles: \"Ain't No Sunshine\" and \"Grandma's Hands\". The former won him his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. His second album, Still Bill, was released in 1972 and included his signature song \"Lean on Me\", which became his first and only number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also earned him another Grammy Award for Best R&B Song.
Withers continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s, such as + 'Justments (1974), Making Music (1975), Naked & Warm (1976) and Menagerie (1977). The latter featured his classic song \"Lovely Day\", which set a record for the longest sustained note on a US chart hit (18 seconds). He also collaborated with other artists such as Grover Washington Jr., Bobby Womack and Ralph MacDonald. In 1981, he released his final studio album, 'Bout Love, which included the duet \"Just the Two of Us\" with Grover Washington Jr. The song won him his third Grammy Award for Best R&B Song.
Withers retired from the music industry in 1985, citing frustration with the record labels and lack of creative control. He lived a low-profile life with his family in Los Angeles and rarely made public appearances. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. He died on March 30, 2020 from heart complications at the age of 81.
The Essential Bill Withers is a tribute to his legacy and a celebration of his music. It features remastered versions of his most popular songs as well as some lesser-known gems. It also includes liner notes by music journalist David Ritz and an introduction by Stevie Wonder. The album is available in MP3 format at 320kbps quality from Beolab1700, a trusted source for high-quality music downloads.
